We started our Africa Unit. This unit will focus on the countries south of the Sahara desert.
Thursday/Friday: Students labeled Africa's political & physical map after their Middle East test (click here and here). On Friday, we applied those ideas to create map notes of Africa (click here).
Monday: Labor Day! Enjoy your day off!
Tuesday: Students took notes on a brief history of Africa. Super Fast History of Africa (click here) and guided notes (click here).
Wednesday: Students took notes about the 6 problems in Africa (Malaria, AIDS/HIV, Famine, Drought, the Lord's Resistance Army, and Genocide). They worked in stations, but for a powerpoint of the information in the stations, click here and click here.
Thursday: Students create a rubric of 4 things they need to feel safe about a country(click there) (eg. access to water, no drugs, no famines, ect.) and 4 "levels" for each quality. Then they research 4 countries in Africa (West Africa, Central Africa, East Africa, South Africa) to see where these countries fall on their rank. If they score a 1, then the student lists a way to improve that area. Research sites include : culturegrams (via cobb digital library) & the global education project.
Friday: Students take notes on the insiders & outsiders in Africa.
